Exam & Laker 1.2

Hey everyone,

thank you all for the tremendous support over the last few weeks. I had a great time presenting Laker and the rest of my diploma thesis at my final exam this tuesday. Everyone was excited, me included! ;)

So what are the next steps for Laker 1.2?

  • Making iFrames possible
Especially for making Google Maps work, but also for using the new embed options by YouTube and Vimeo.
  • Enabling Autoplay for Videos (maybe for dossier-start-videos!)
I already got it working, but I need to dive in which videos iPhone and iPad can play. It seems there are some differences regarding the video dimensions.
  • Inline-Video on iPhone
Already working in iPad, but iPhone seems to handle that differently. Have to look into that.
  • Approval of the NYC-Example App
I’m in contact with very cool people at the moment, regarding some content for the NYC-Example-App. If you remember: The app got rejected, because “demonstration apps are not allowed”, so I need some real content on the topic.

If you have any tipps or suggestions, please comment below. Thanks! ;)

  1. The Laker-framework looks great. I would love to build a HTML5-Magazine without building an app. Like Gerrit says here: http://praegnanz.de/weblog/laker-macht-die-produktion-von-magazin-apps-einfach
My college and I tried it and edited the nav.css (display:none –> display:block), but perhaps you have a better idea?
    Thank you very much!

  2. Hey Roland,
an HTML-Only version without the app is possible, but the performance for the page transition is really really bad. There are some people trying that out, but for now, in my opinion, it’s not really an option.

  3. I’m very excited about Laker, you’ve done a tremendous job, congratulations and keep up the good work! I’m thrilled to see where this project is going and how your thinking will perhaps influence publishers. I’m amazed and very happy that someone like you, a young graduate, is demonstrating the way that big publishing houses (who just buy everything Adobe tells them) are failing to see. Hopefully Apple will work on the performance drawbacks we’re still experiencing in regards to (home screen launched) web apps compared to native apps, then Laker could really liberate magazine-style digital publishing. Very exciting times ahead for sure.

Oh and Herzlichen Glückwunsch for passing your exam!

  4. Hi Florian, Congratulations on your exam and thanks for your great work!!! As a New Yorker I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the non-demonstration app ;-) Love the photos already!

  5. hey!

i’m kind of newbie developer, i would like to know if possible to set some variables that uodate data from server? we would like to make a digital magazine for our campus, and we just want to know if there is any chance to add content from a server and app will auto download it when the app is open…. thanks so much in advantage :)

  6. Hi

I was wondering why Laker uses XHTML1.0 Transitional and not HTML5 when both the latest version of Baker and the frontpage of this site say HTML5.

The work looks good so far though, can’t wait to see where this all will be going.

  7. Hey Florian, great news on your exam, I knew you would do fantastic. can’t wait to see your updates, well done

  8. Florian,

Thanks for sharing this! We just submitted an iPad book yesterday featuring some of your features from Laker.

Few shots of it on Dribbble here

Dossier fullscreen start videos would be a fantastic idea. We’d hoped to have a video cover – but think we’ll have to hold out til 1.1 as we couldn’t find a workable solution.

    Thanks again!
